A couple of possibilities that might match the symptoms you report -I just bought my raspberry pi 5 and bought a brand new samsung 512gb micro sd card. I downloaded the newest version of the pi image installer from this website. Told it to write to the microsd card connected to my windows 10 computer and it resulted in an error. It said "Error Running diskpart:" With nothing describing the error after the colon. This brand new out of the box micro sd card is able to be read by windows and formatted by windows and I can even treat it like a normal drive by windows with no problems.
The microSD card reader/writer built into your relatively old Win10 PC might not be SDXC-compatible, which it will need to be to use a 512Gb card.
The actual working capacity of your 512Gb microSD card might be substantially less than claimed.
There are test programs available for Microsoft Windows that might help you check out these possible issues.
If you are able to connect your RPi[5] board via cabled Ethernet directly to your local network you could write the Operating System to microSD using the reader/writer built into the RPi[5] with no reliance on your Windows PC.
