Visually VLC gives the impression of turning the display off/on as it goes in/out of full screen. Another manifestation I've noticed is, when it doesn't crash (the pause resize play fudge) it might lose synchronisation such that top is okay but as the display "draws" down the screen, lines are progressively offset to the right. When it reaches the bottom it's almost like a vsync problem, flickers, repeats same from top. Does this two or three times per second. It's random what happens next. Either the pause resize play fudge will fix it or you're stuck with it like that even after quitting VLC. I can only reboot then.
It's also possible the above effect is a result of the rpi/tv combo. It isn't a good tv and it must be over a decade old.
