Beginners • Re: Extracting files from a tar.gz archive

I was looking for a copy of Mah Jongg that will play on a Pi 5, and found a tar.gz file on the Webfootgames /pi site. However, I have not been able to find any installation instructions and have no idea how to process a tar.gz file to install the game.

I do not even know whether this file would work with my copy of RPiOS x64, especially since the file seems to have been created way back when Pi 2 and Pi 3 were the most common hosts.

From browsing here, I suspect that running “sudo apt install . . .” is not appropriate, but that is the limit of my terminal skills at the moment. So, please can some kind soul tell me if I will be able to run this file on my Pi 5, whether I need to move to a different o/s on the Pi to run it, how to extract the files from the tar.gz file, and where I should put the files on my SD card after extraction.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice . . .
If you are running the desktop version of Raspberry Pi OS, you should just be able to double click on the file and it should open up xarchiver

https://github.com/ib/xarchiver/wikiautomatically.

It certainly does on mine.

On a general point...be very careful about downloading files from sites that you don't know...especially if; like that one they are not "https" sites and are just plain "http" sites.

Whenever possible, I would advise picking applications from the official repositories.
