Best guess you need to extract the tar.gz contents to / so the various files will be in the expected places.

Yeah, I did try that (actually I put it in /usr/bin) and got the same error message. But having it in any path and then adding that path to $PATH has worked for me on other machines, but hasn't here. In my posts, I'm actually navigating directly to the directory where the julia binary sits and running from there. Its a sub-directory from my $HOME path - let me know if my assumptions on this are wrong.
